Ladders In Superstition & Folklore Is superstition an artifact relegated to the past along with stories of the Brothers Grimm? Maybe not. How many times a day does observance of an ancient superstition take place? Traditionally,
walking under a ladder has been considered bad luck for hundreds of years.
You might assume it is because of the wobbly nature of a ladder, but that
is not the primary reason bad luck is bestowed on those foolish enough to
walk beneath a ladder. It is because ladders were seen as a spiritual
artifice, representing ascent into heaven. A ladder leaning up against a
surface forms a triangle, which traditionally symbolized life. Supposedly
the spirits were using the ladder to ascend to heavenly spheres. Walking
beneath the ladder would disturb them and bring down their wrath. |

Just be sure to watch for objects falling from the person using the ladder, and be careful the ladder is placed away from a door being suddenly opened won't cause a disaster. |
